River Medlock City Centre
Not pretty but involving walk through backstreets of Manchester centre
About
Not an official route, but we were entertained. No marks. You’ll need to follow the map closely. All pavement or tarmac, with much road crossing. Less noise than feared, as mostly backstreets or campus/landscape areas. A deluge of alleys, buildings and details from many ages. The Medlock is often described as culverted, but surfaces sometimes—this path can’t follow all, but gets close, and passes Castlefield Basin, the modern‐ancient backstreets of Hulme, the unusual sixties architecture of UMIST, and ends at the futuristic Mayfield Park. Another of our routes, the Manchester Salford Junction Canal could be joined to make an epic, and if you’d like a guide, the Free Manchester Walking Tour roams the central area.
