Manchester Salford Junction Canal
Path of a canal tunnel through city centre
About
Path follows, on the surface, a canal that was over half tunnel. For detail, try Hidden Manchester. For timeline, try this video. In another world the canal, which mostly exists, would have been redeveloped? The walk is extended to Salford because it’s an unusual cross‐route, the original aim was to join the Bolton–Bury canal, and Salford Crescent is an good end. The walk follows the line only roughly. Solid underfoot, three major roads treat cycles/pedestrians as underclass. Scenery veers between broken relics and posh Manc. Few marks of the canals—the original locks and two stubs. Passes many Manchester landmarks. Mostly for those interested in history, but an unusual perspective on the city. Best alternative path blocked.
