Review

Please note: the transport museum is open when trains run, so is open many more days than we have (reliably) marked. Bury Transport Museum is only a few minutes from Bury centre, but in an off‐road cutting which has been landscaped. Shows how the English can’t do this, and no wonder kids love it. Then there’s the museum. Housed in an old railway shed, the inside has a raised level and loop flow that that make the museum a place to be explored. With an extraordinary range of vehicles—there are tractors, trams, a Wren locomotive, a Scammell Scarab and more. This is more than you could expect of a national, never mind a town, museum. The signage and displays are child‐leaning, but enough for adults. And a small cafe. The museum is part of one of the largest attractions in Manchester, the East Lancs Railway—across the road from the Bury Train Station. Not enough for a day out, but as part of a visit to Bury, or a day on the railway, consider allowing time. If you have an interest in transport, and/or engines, and/or vehicle history, may be worth travelling for—some of these exhibits are unusual, and could never otherwise be seen together.
