Edgar Wood Trail
Middleton
See the dreams of Edgar Wood
About
This path is an original— buildings by Edgar Wood are mostly well‐marked with plaques. Best walk follows the map arrows, covers as many buildings as possible in Middleton. 2 miles through housing estate, 1 mile of suburban road proved unfixable. Outstandingly tricky navigation to Rhodes, satnav may help. Two thirds is pavement, other is park‐path. The main roads are dense with fumes and outstandingly noisy. Almost all is estate, culvert or backstreet. But, unless you connect the work of Rennie Mackintosh, there is nothing like this anywhere in the world (personal favourite, Temple Street); note also Samuel Bamford marks and steps painted by Laurence Lowry but scene destroyed.
