Review
This may seem ghoulish—if so, skip to another attraction. But there are reasons beyond personal ties for a visit to Southern Cemetery. This is the largest city cemetery in England, second largest in Europe—it’s a half‐mile square. Beyond size, the cemetery contains the graves of many locally‐famous people and six grade‐2 listed buildings. In the past the cemetery had guided tours. Not much tourism now, though there is some signposting and a public toilet near the offices. Only facilities nearby are florists, funeral directors and a few bistros. The surrounding neighbourhood is residential and/or large company buildings. With private transport, possible to drive from or to West Didsbury or Chorlton Water Park. Some like graveyards, and will find Southern Cemetery a place contemplative, quiet, with long flat walks. References say Morrissey did.
