Review
Exhibits in this museum are… the world’s first supermodel, a tandem‐parallelogram bicycle, a live clock mechanism for churches, a detailed three‐dimensional model of the Standedge canal‐tunnel dig, and much, much more. The exhibits are mainly from contribution, but the oddity is part of the fun. And something else… all the towns of Manchester have history of interest, but Saddleworth Museum pulled some Heritage Lottery funding, which shows. Housed in a near‐perfect building, the presentation is outstanding with displays that could be art‐work and signage that pitches between interaction for the kids and depth for the serious visitor. The museum is small and opening hours are afternoons only, so I guess visitors will say, ‘quite nice for an hour’—that’s the English for you. Also, Uppermill is a good place for an afternoon, with coffee shops, pubs, a canal/river and small parks.
